LOST HIGHWAY by Hank Williams. Written by Leon Payne "Lost Highway", often assumed to have come from Hank's pen, was written by Leon Payne... Payne was a blind musician who worked out of Jerry Irby's nightclub in Houston and guested on the Hayride and the Opry. His original version... had been released on the Nashville-based Bullet label in October 1948. Colin Escott, Hank Williams - The Biography, Boston, 1995, p. 98. MYRTIE (Mrs. Leon) PAYNE: In the early days of Leon's career, he hitchhiked from one place to another, finding jobs wherever he could. Once he was in Califonia hitchhiking to Alba, Texas, to visit his sick mother. He was unable to get a ride and finally got help from the Salvation Army. It was while he was waiting for help that he wrote this song. Telephone interview, Dec 20, 1972; reprinted in Dorothy Horstman, Sing Your Heart Out, Country Boy, New York, 1976, p. 368.

The new so-called country just can't match the feeling Hank and the other legends put into their songs... Like they say, he lived every song he wrote and you can feel what he was feeling at the time.

Any Hank williams CD is good one to start with. I recommend Hank's "40 Greatist Hits box set". In my opinion Hank can be divided in several areas: His cutting edge songs of his day (that's the greatist hits area); His spiritual songs. Then the Luke the Drifter series. Besides those you have the demo's and live performance records. I remember someone said after Hank died, that his they could get Hank's dirty laundry to spin ay 45 revolutions, they would have a hit.
  16. Fayette Says:
I'm just getting into Hank Williams. What album should I start with? Would it be cheating to start with a greatest hits? if so, which one (there seem to be many)? Thanks for any and all opinions!
  17. Eithna Says:
Most singers are lucky to get one signiture song. Hank recorded only 66 professional sessions songs in his time. Out of those produced 34 top ten hits (most at the top), followed by 3 more from his over dubbed demos after his death. Do the counting myself of the songs most remembered from Hank. It has to be a record for any perfromer.
  18. Suzanne Says:

  23. Palti Says:
I am a big Williams fan. I have screwed up everything i have ever touched.Worked with JP Morgan/Ernst/Young my life is a disaster. Feel hanks pain
  24. Vic Says:
A huge fan and i don't appreciate yer outlook on a great southern country man. He was a genius in "twang". ARKANSAS APPROVED
  25. Botwolf Says:
By usual music standards, one could easily wonder why Hank's success reached the top and rooted up there. But that would mean missing the point... He was natural, he sang life, his own included, he stressed his southern drawl and his blade edged voice could slide way down to almost a cavern echo, when necessary and finally, I'd say his non-chalant, but friendly way of approaching his audience, all of that was the key to his heaven or hell, depending from the reader's philosophy of life. Thanks!
